LONE SURVIVOR BULL SHIT

Tube lite Tom Heading

Be careful what you read. By pure accident Tubularsock was sitting at a bus stop waiting and right next to me on the bus bench was a copy of the Oakland Tribune which is considered by the brain dead the “local” newspaper.

Now in truth it is made of paper and it is “local” but if one wishes to get into say something like journalism well ……….

But it was just lying there and Tubularsock was just sitting there and the bus wasn’t due for another fourteen minutes, if that really means anything anyway.

So Tubularsock casually reached over and picked it up. And it was only the front section and that was all. No advertisements, no sports page, no travel, cultural, or movie sections. Just the front page all alone on the bus bench.

And the dominate story on the front page was a movie review of a new film Lone Survivor. Which is a new movie about the same old propagandistic shit. The film is about the failed June 28, 2005 mission, Operation Red Wings conducted by SEAL Team 10.

A title that would have explained the truth of the operation better should have been Dumb Shits Die Defending Aggression

Not to give away the plot but they all got themselves blown to bits. Ok, except for Marcus Luttrell who to this day says he still struggles from survivor’s guilt.

If the guy would wake up to what he did by joining the military his guilt might just overtake him! But he’s still lost in his own ego shit.

The Tribune’s story covers some local boys that got themselves all dead and their parents justification why their sons aren’t at Christmas “no more”.

It’s this kind of bull shit that makes younger people gravitate toward “joining up” but this type of aggrandizement has always been used. Lattrell says that the movie is as real as it can be and war is the lowest common denominator but “It happened and that’s what I did for a living. It’s business as usual.”

And that should be the take away ……. It’s business as usual.

As for the parents rather than wake up to the fact that their children were gunned down by their own stupidity and the government that sent them there are war criminals seemed to have missed their sentimental brains. No they are being quoted about their loss like it couldn’t have been avoided.

Of course they still all gathered with long faces and grief-stricken at annual barbecues for SEAL families but they have NEVER faced the true facts …….. their sons were the aggressors and occupiers of Afghanistan and the Taliban lived there!

Will this ever change ……… not until those parents who have lost children face the facts that their government lied to them and pumped them all up thinking that their dead children are heroes. And what do they have to show for it?

A folded flag, a couple of medals, a coffin and some memories that haunt. A very poor investment if you ask Tubularsock. Maybe it is time for military families to wake up to the fact of what their loved ones are really doing!

Dear Tube, Having watched an interview with the director, stars, and Marcus Luttrell on Charlie Rose, I decided to get the book, “Lone Survivor”, to get more detail into the events being discussed in the interview. Much was made of the brutally arduous training SEAL’s are forced to endure. The end result of such training were rock hard, incredibly efficient, killers, who would lay down their lives for their brothers in-arms and the nation.
Loyalty, honor, and sacrifice are what the book says the SEAL’s stand for, and despite the “liberal media” in the USA which denigrates and undermines them, these warriors will continue to defend the nation according to Luttrell.
What Luttrell misses in my opinion is the larger question: Why are we here? In Afghanistan, in Iraq,
in Vietnam. Are these wars in America’s interests? In the world’s interests? In anyone’s interest?
I suppose soldiers are trained not to ask these questions and that is the tragedy of it all.

Dave, Tubularsock believes that you have hit the nail on the head. To train a killer is what the SEALs are all about. This “loyalty, honor, and sacrifice” is the bull shit cloak they cover themselves in and is so honored by the power structure.

In truth they really are only trained dogs that are disposable.

Their inability to see what and why they are doing what they are doing is the sad part. And all the bull shit adulation by their sick, confused, and pathetic parents would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

Thanks for your insightful comment. Tubularsock is not a fan of Charlie Rose because all commentators that are allowed on TV and cable have agreed to limits placed on them and therefore can not expose much truth and still hold onto their jobs.

That is how the message is controlled.

The questions you ask at the end of your comment are the questions we should be asking the US govt much more often than we do. The news media has largely failed in that regard, as it is there job to speak up for the public and ask the tough questions.

Tanya, thank you for taking time to comment. I enjoy your blog a great deal.
Yes, we as citizens should be “in the government’s face” way more than we are. Most people are asleep to what we as a country do in the world and even within our boarders.

Unless one is directly affected then the interest level is very concerned.

The news media is pretty much bought up so information is controlled and the message is redirected toward ignorance rather than attempting to have an informed populous. Most of the time it is pro-government propaganda in truth.

But, as you know, there are plenty of news sources to dig through and if you go to the foreign presses you have a better chance to see what is going on and being informed.

Great minds think alike and all that, Tubular…you might like Arthur Silber’s take on the cognitive dissonance required to constantly glorify soldiers while shutting our eyes and ears to the victims they create.

My lone defense of soldiers consists of the reality that many of the herd are culled from communities with few job or career prospects. Then again to some, working the golden arches is preferable to being or making others cannon fodder.

Thank you Jeff for taking the time to comment and thank you for the link. I am familiar with cognitive dissonance and practice it rather well myself. I am looking forward to Silber’s take on it.

I do understand the issue of pulling in those who are already pushed against the economic wall and are suckered into a life of crime joining the military. That is why I’m a big supporter of the free market system and the ability to sell drugs on the street corner.

If life was only fair we, as a culture, would not allow recruiters in our school or drug pushers but because life isn’t always fair maybe having them each set up tables next to each other would give the students a better chance at career opportunities.

        Hey Jeff:

The Silber article was extremely interesting and on point. I too have followed this total fabrication of what and why and the way the focus is arranged to mislead and frame “our” actions as somehow “nobel and correct”. It’s “old school” antics with the modern psych ops flair.

As for Chris Floyd, he has always been valuable for me. His insights fit well with my own but he has more direct information than I but that information has only bolstered
what I had gleaned myself over the years.

Thank you for linking me to Arthur Silber. I agree with him without hesitation.

And for those who want to expand this conversation here is the link Jeff has already provided http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2014/01/when-atrocity-is-central-to-your-being.html

  4. It’s probably a good thing you don’t live in New Zealand and don’t have to celebrate Anzac day. The holiday celebrates the battle of Gallipoli – a total fuck-up by the military brass in which Kiwi soldiers were used as cannon fodder and 87% were mowed down by the Turkish army (while they were trying to climb a cliff)..

New Zealand had the 2nd highest death rate per capita in World War I. 42% of men of military age served – approximately 100,000. A total of 18,000 were killed.

World War II wasn’t quite so bad. In World War II approximately 12,000 New Zealanders (0.73% of the 1940 population) were killed in action, a much higher percentage than either Australia, (0.57%) Canada, (0.40%) and the UK (0.57%). It was a fairly common scenario that British soldiers were given priority in any rescue attempt. Australian and New Zealand soldiers were often left to.

Instead of being enraged at having their male population decimated by being drafted into two wars halfway around the world, every year on April 25 Kiwis get up at dawn to celebrate being duped and butchered by Mother England.

stuartbramhall, thank you for warning Tubularsock about the level of fuck-up-ness New Zealander’s are capable of when it comes to complete stupidity.

But I’m not sure that they have cornered the market on these types of celebrations. And there are so many of them.

The only veterans Tubularsock respects are those who have joined Veteran’s Against The War. The rest are just sad-sacks-of-shit with stupid hats on.

World War I was just a simple mass-murder slaughter for all countries. It stands high on the list of complete insanity.

I see that New Zealand was part of Bush’s Coalition Of The Willing. I guess they still haven’t learned!

Good luck and keep your powder dry.

Yes, we still go to war, again and again.’

It is difficult to understand how we continue to murder each other and not notice that it is us we’er killing. Maybe the fact that we have been doing it for so long that we haven’t the time to figure how to like each other.

I think that the problem is that we think in terms of “other” and unless we meet people directly we tend to forget that they are just like us.

As long as we can keep up that illusion then killing them is easy.

Once you make the one-on-one connection that becomes far more difficult.

Tubularsock as well has spent his life trying to understand this shit and I haven’t seen much improvement …….. so what gives? Could there be money interests behind all this?

  7. To ‘piggyback’ on an earlier post in regards ‘to working at McDonalds or joining the military’ that is the question. My choice would have been McDonalds, but of course, I can’t say what motivates others to choose the military over flipping burgers for a living. One might consider the occupational hazards of the one over the other, not to forget that since we ALL have a head on our shoulders which is supposed to hold a brain, there should be enough brain cells linked together in there to be able to come up with the knowledge that we fight, not OUR enemy but an enemy that is chosen for US by our fucked up government. No one in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan nor in Libya has done a damn thing to me to warrant a shoot-out at whatever government sponsored corral. If the American government has a problem with any of those countries, then as far as I am concerned, they can put their own ass inside a missile and project it on over and if THEIR children are so inclined to go with them, then by all means, let them have at it.

So, in short, shall I join the military and shoot a stranger or flip a burger for a stranger? I’ll take ‘flipping burgers for a stranger’ for $200 Alex!

    Excellent post, Tube! As usual!

Excellent post and one that hits extremely close to home for me. Two of my stepkids joined the military within the last 4 yrs and their decisions absolutely baffled me. I’d thought they were smart kids…after all, both graduated HS with honors, jobs, scholarships etc., etc. And not one but BOTH of them thought War for a Paycheck was the best choice to make?! They had internet access…brains (so I’d thought)…me, arguing like the most Wicked of All Stepmothers…and still, off they skipped, happy as can be with visions of sign-up bonuses and *job security* dancing in their heads. Their bio-Mom sports the Hooray! for US! ribbons on her car and gushes on about how we all, “owe them our gratitude” for what they’ve agreed to do…

Uhm…HOW? How can someone stand back and CHEER their offspring as they march them off to war? This is socially acceptable because…?

Because men like Cheney get authority over how stories like Black Hawk are (mis)told. Because war propaganda like Top Gun is considered entertainment. I’ve not seen – or even heard of – Lone Survivor…and I feel no twinge with judging a book by it’s cover (story) or a movie by the preview. I’ll pass on both. If it’s about war and it’s a hit, I agree with you…it’s bullshit.

MB thanks for taking the time to share your insightful thoughts. Wow. It is beyond my understanding too. At one time I just thought that males weren’t all that bright as a group but now females are too joining up like they don’t have a brain in their head either.

I always told my children that I’d be more proud of them if they sold crack on the street corner than to join any military. Of course like young people they only listened to their father half way. They never joined the military but they went off and each found a career and none ended up selling crack. Oh well, I did the best I could. Sometimes children just don’t listen!

In high school, a military recrouter came to talk to our class. He stressed that a big advantage to joining the military is that it looks good on a job application and that the govt pays for college classes. So that must be part of the appeal, too, although I don’t know if those advantages really pan out in th real world.

Oh yeah, the military recruiter. The height of scum-bagism! They promise anything to get their quota.

In Tubularsock’s opinion you want to stay away from anything to do with the military. The mind set that is pushed is one of a non-thinking trained dog that will follow orders without resistance.

Having a military background has little bearing on a job application in truth but getting your college paid for is a major draw for many especially poor people.

The cost of putting your life in the hands of the military is a huge price to pay for a college education. My suggestion is Community College and a low paying job and just do that for a few years. Or better yet, start your own business and be your own boss and you learn as you go. There are a lot of ways to proceed but the military has got to be the worst.
