What we lack in military prowess, we make up in viciousness. The US is the world leader in total war aka counterinsurgency war, where you target civilians, particularly women and children. We learned this in the so-called Indian Wars, when Native Americans outnumbered us and their warriors’ skill exceeded that of our armies and militias. Since we couldn’t win by force of arms, we burned their fields and tortured and murdered their women and children.
Since then, there’s been no looking back. This irregular, counterinsurgency warfare (which violates most of the Geneva Convention) became ingrained in our military tradition. The whole notion of “enemy combatants,” which we used to justify Gitmo, came out of the Indian wars. Bush administration attorney John Yoo mentions the precedent of Indian prisoners of war having no legal protection (against being executed) in the memo he wrote justifying the designation of “enemy combatants.”
