PRESSTITUTES PERSONIFIED!

Once again, American Journalism is not only lacking but just doesn’t exist …. if it ever did really, to tell the truth.

We can all recall the famous dictum, “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war” spouted by William Randolph Hearst.

You see, Hearst’s reporter, the famed illustrator Frederic Remington wanted to come home from Cuba in 1897 because nothing was happening …. so he sent a cable to Hearst stating, “Everything quiet.  There is no trouble here.  There will be no war.  Wish to return.”

And Hearst’s response was the above pictures-war statement.

And if you look at this briefly it really provided a template for “GOING TO WAR” ever since. Seriously! Every war since, the precursor, always and still is false, sensational news that prepares the public for war! Oh, a well placed, dead mutilated kid, is a must!

Perfect, really!

You see, Hearst grasped onto the Cuban revolt against Spain in 1895 and saw it as a way to increase his New York Journal readership and pull readers from his rival the New York World.

Hearst’s tactic was to run increasingly sensational stories. TRUE OR NOT! And he went with stories of violence, sex, catastrophe, and mayhem which later became characterized by the term “yellow journalism”.

And quickly to put this historical adventurism of Hearst in context to our current Syrian Chimera, Hearst was able to actually corral the public into believing that the sinking of the USS Maine (which, by the way, blew up from unknown causes, maybe a coal fire) was blamed on Spanish treachery by the New York Journal. Within three months, the United States was at war with Spain in what became known as the Spanish-American War.

And “Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!” became the American public’s sentiment promoted by Hearst’s paper vigorously publishing stories that helped create and foster those feelings.

See the parallel? DAH!

The FACT that “yellow journalism” is the major type of journalism left today goes a long way in explaining why the general public is just so plain trusting and stupid.

True, it may not be the only reason for this stupidity but it definitely promotes it!

I didn’t know this – not surprising. We know so little about anything.

  3. According to historian George Seldes, Hearst did the same with all his pro-Hitler propaganda prior to World War II, in support of a movement by the American Manufacturers Association for the US to join the war on the Axis side.

Thank you DrB. It just shows you how intelligent Hearst happened to be and if we had followed his lead we would have not had to wait so long for fascism to take over our land. Oh yeah, it’s democratic fascism Tubularsock remembers now.

It’s been awhile but Tubularsock remembers something about a money exchanged between Hitler and Hearst to swing press support in Hitler’s favor in the Hearst papers. (May be incorrect on this but it was something close to that.)

      Thanks for your comment.

Jeez Tube–are you a spoil sport or what? If it hadn’t been for the Spanish-American War we would not have the Dewey Memorial in Union Square-one of the three great phallic symbols in San Francisco; Coit Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid being the other two.
And Teddy Roosevelt would not have been president; and we wouldn’t have a torture center at Guantanamo Bay; or been able to mismanage the Philippine Islands for 48 years.
And Hearst would not have been able to make the millions to build his castle at San Simeon and store away his mistress there for over 20 years.
You want to change all that good history that made us an imperial nation. Teddy Roosevelt must be turning over in his grave.

  5. Tubularsock, If it weren’t for lies and propaganda (a major subset of lies) our glorious free press would have nothing to say. Couldn’t have that! But maybe they could just run endless advertising (still more lies and propaganda). Would anyone even notice the difference?
Sigh! I must be getting old, but I’m damn sick of yet another rehearsal for an unprovoked? … aggressive?, er, preventive?, um, humanitarian? war. They barely bother to change the ad copy or slap a fresh coat of paint on all the bullshit. And apparently, they needn’t bother, enough of us fall for the scam every damn time. But thanks for reminding us this is not some new twisted outrage, just our ongoing proud american warmongering tradition at its finest, and most obvvious and obnoxious. – Linda

Tubularsock is with you on this, Linda. Somehow along with everything else creativity is dead.

It is amazing that they can put ANY monkey as leader and the wars just come along with them.

But it does give Tubularsock hope however you can’t get there from here!
