Tube heading slingshot 2014SAFETY FIRST — A PARODY.

Lets say you went off to buy a car and you found one that looked real nice and was perfect for your needs. So you asked the dealer about its mechanical reliability and he says it runs well and it’s safety features are good.

But then you noticed that the tires had been painted to look new and they were rather worn and the dealer tells you that the Safety Committee had given them the “OK”.

Relieved you go with the dealer on a test drive and you notice that the brakes are spongy and that the brakes didn’t always engage when you stepped on the brake pedal. And the dealer says that the Safety Committee had inspected the brakes and had determined that they still had life in them and put out a memo stating that the brakes should be inspected again during next years safety update. But for now the Safety Committee had given the brakes an “OK”.

Comforted by the “OK” sticker you decide to buy the car but as you are driving off the lot you notice that the windshield wipers were not working so you call this to the attention of the dealer. He informs you that the dealership will take full responsibility for their replacement during the next routine safety check. The dealer tells you that the Safety Committee will be informed that this replacement has been schedule and because it is not raining now it should be fine.

Not convinced you say, “are you sure?” The dealer says that to replace them now would cost far too much because it would require a crew to be pulled off the regular repair rotation schedule and set back regular repair maintenance. This may jeopardize safety.

And it’s not raining so it should be fine. And in order to relieve your fears he adds, “DON’T BE CONCERNED, WE DO IT ALL THE TIME”.

As you are driving away the sales manager places a big red “X” on the sales performance chart and “high-fives” all around. The sales manager reminds the head of the Safety Committee of their golf date tomorrow followed with a night out on the dealership expense account to THE SUCKY-SUCKY, a Japanese sushi and lap dance lounge. Everyone is happy.

And you are happy too. You rush home and gather the three kids and wife and Fido and head off on your vacation. Driving down the California coast on Highway 1 the family marvels at the majestic views and the exciting curves with the sheer drop of the cliffs to the Pacific Ocean below.

All of a sudden you hit a thick fog patch and in your attempt to slow your left front tire blows and you swerve. Your visibility being limited, due to the failure of your wipers, the moisture masses on your windshield as you attempt once again to brake ……. only to discover your pumping action is to no avail and your car plunges off the highway and down the sheer drop with you and your three children and wife and Fido to a fiery death below.

Car-off-cliff

Sadness abound and all morned the death of you and your three children and wife and Fido.

Questions arose about the safety of Highway 1 and the safety of your car.

CALTRANS  puts out a press release stating, that while driving Highway 1 you must be careful. All protection barriers were in place and had been maintained to the specifications of the State Safety Commission.

The automobile dealership put out a press release stating, that like ALL autos sold by the dealership your auto too had been fully inspected and had passed their extensive safety check procedure.

However one young journalist who hadn’t been in journalism long enough to understand that the dealership was a major advertiser in her newspaper over-reported. She discovered by investigating beyond the standard coping and “reporting” verbatim from the press releases that other issues about the “track record” of the dealership safety procedures had been called into question several times before.

The dealership called the editor of the newspaper and discussed a possible reassignment for the young journalist to obituaries and the newspaper agreed. The dealership placed an additional order for a larger Labor Day ad. The newspapers sales manager placed a big red “X” on the sales performance chart with “high-fives” all around. And everyone was happy.

However, to ease public pressure the dealership stated that it would cooperate with the Safety Committee’s investigation of safety procedures because the dealership’s highest commitment was to SAFETY.

The Safety Committee set it’s staff to the task of doing a complete investigation of the safety procedures of the dealership and to submit a report back to the Committee when it had been completed. And everyone was happy.

Two years later the staff presented its report to the Safety Committee along with its recommendation for improvement  and a meeting was called to inform the public of the safety findings.

The staff recommend that rather than shoring up the existing safety procedure that allows the car to go over the cliff and then responding to the accident that maybe changing to a new  procedure based on the European model of safety that focuses on continually reducing accident risk by replacing parts with the best parts and keeping the upgrade current rather than reacting to safety problems after the accident has occurred.

The dealership immediately rejected the recommendations as too confusing and too costly. Following the European model where the dealership would replace parts with the highest quality replacement is not as good as what we do now by getting by on the old parts until they need replacing and then replace those parts with reasonably priced after-market product. THAT WORKS FOR US!

The Safety Committee voted down it’s own staff and told them to rewrite the safety recommendations to be more in line with the current agreed upon system. And everyone was happy.

Oh, I forgot. The Safety Committee all got really good deals on lease/buy contracts from the dealership. And none of the Committee ever took a drive on Highway 1 and they all lived happily ever after ………… the end.

Chevron Light tube

In Richmond, Ca in 2012 a massive Chevron Oil Refinery fire occurred which sent 15,000 to the areas hospitals and shut down one of California’s major crude oil refineries units for months.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board had its staff investigate the fire and create recommendations for improved safety.

This report was released to the public on January 15, 2014.

The key recommendations:

A. Replace the current California patchwork of largely reactive regulations with a more rigorous, performance based system. (A European model of safety)

B. Inspectors would have technical training and experience that is on par with the personnel employed by the oil companies. (What a concept!)

C. Safety case reports generated by the oil companies would be rigorously reviewed, audited and enforced.

Well Chevron and the oil industries, the “scientific” community, The United Steel Workers Union, and political interests all protested any real change.

Now let Tubularsock guess why this motley crew would oppose changes that would improve safety from the current hodge-podge.

Well for Chevron and the oil companies ….. profit! Chevron made more money when the refinery was closed down because the price of gas in California increased because of short supply and increased demand. As well as not paying out fort costly repairs until something blows up. PROFIT at the risk of people’s lives. Thank you so much Chevron.

Now, let me see …… what “scientific” community? Why would a scientist be in favor of corroded pipes? Well, only scientist who work for Chevron that’s what kind of scientists.

But, The United Steel Workers Union? Jobs! Now you’d think that a union would want to protect the safety of their workers ……… no ……… JOBS that is all that is important!

Most Steam-Fitters and Boilermakers that Tubularsock have discussed refinery safety with will tell you that the only thing that stands between the oil company and a worker’s safety is the foreman and the shop stewart. If they are strong willed they won’t put their work team in danger.

They also have plenty of stories where the company will use undersized pipes and fast repairs in order to keep production going even at major risk to life and public safety.

And then “political interests” which mostly is about campaign donations. What else is there for a politician?

So what is the end result of this 115 page report?

The Chairman of the 3 member  U.S. Chemical Safety Board, Rafael Moure-Eraso voted in FAVOR of a new direction to a broken system.

But his fellow two Board members, Beth Rosenberg and Mark Griffin voted for business as usual.

So the Board told the staff that they had 120 days to oil it down.

Progress is our most important product ……… bend over!

tube envirerment report

Want some good news from Tubularsock? Come on. I know it’s different but I’m lov’n it!

Remember the Nimiipuu? Well don’t worry if you know the Niimiipuutimt language there would be no problem.

Oh, you don’t know Niimiipuutimt? Hmmm.

Well to save you the time of learning a new language to discover this good news Tubularsock will translate this for you …….. hey, don’t thank me now.

In Niimiipuutimt the Nimiipuu translates into “the people” but the name we know these people by is what the French Canadian fur trappers called them, the Nez Perce.

They are a Pacific Northwest Native American people who now have a reservation in Idaho. How that all happened is the typical tragic drama of the U.S./Native American Holocaust relationship.

But, now-is-now and the Nez Perce have stopped the shipment of General Electric’s subsidiary Omega Morgan heaving hauling of XL pipeline supplies from crossing their reservation on Idaho State Highway 12.

It came down like this.

The Nez Perce asked the Federal Government’s Forest Service to stop GE from having mega-loads that are not allowed on regular highways to not be allowed to cross their Reservation and Clearwater National Forest due to environmental and native land treaty rights that were not being considered.

The State of Idaho gave GE a permit to use Highway 12 and said to discuss the issue with the Forest Service and the Nez Perce before moving the first mega-load of equipment for the XL Pipeline.

Instead GE started to move their first mega-load along Highway 12 and was delayed by the Nez Perce who blocked the highway and were arrested for blocking the highway.

image

The Nez Perce hauled the Forest Service back into Federal Court and the judge ruled that the Forest Service has the authority to stop GE from moving mega-loads through the region and that, “The Tribe’s treaty rights, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, and forest management policy all trumped the megaloads on Highway 12”.

Of course this is still in play but this round goes to the “Indians not the Cowboys”.

tar sands copy

GE in return filed a motion with the federal court, asking the judge to reconsider his decision that lead to the Highway 12 closure. But that is unlikely.

The fear is that by allowing these shipments to continue using Highway12 it would become an “industrial corridor” and would ruin a pristine environment.

An interesting side-note is that GE seems pretty sure that the XL pipeline is a done deal and is still moving all the pipe and equipment into place. Now will Mr. Step-And-Fetch-It-Obummer man up and say NO to the XL?

Tubularsock is not holding his breath!

Tube heading Neon 2013

Have you ever been on a city bus and have a guy come up to you and run a story about  how his mother has just got out of the hospital and she is lying in the gutter and all he needs is a dollar-fifty-eight to have enough money to get her a cab and take her home?

Well, it’s called jive and it appears from the outside that Obummer is rather persuasive in using it. At least with Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune, who met with the president before his speech at Georgetown University.

In an email Tubularsock received from the Sierra Club, Brune wrote that “Obama said the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will be a no-go if the State Department determines that it will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. After rejecting KXL, he will need to keep taking bold steps like ending Arctic drilling, mountaintop removal, and protecting our public lands from mining and drilling.”

Now what is WRONG with Obummer’s statement, “The Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will be a no-go if the State Department determines that it will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”

Got it yet?

Well Brune didn’t get it because he goes on to say that “After rejecting KXL . . .”!

Obummer NEVER said he was rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline!

Obummer said, “The Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will be a no-go if the State Department determines that it will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”

And in there lies the jive …………

When the State Department weighed in earlier this year, it largely found that approving the Keystone project would have little impact on climate change.

Remember it was the State Department who hired Environmental Resources Management to do the environmental impact report and ERM is tied into The American Petroleum Institute a lobbyist mouthpiece for BIG OIL!

ERM also has ties with TransCanada and what you have here is the oil industry writing the environmental impact report for the State Department and the State Department approving it and saying the project isn’t a harm to the environment as the oil leaks rise above their $500 shoes!

Now in his speech Obummer stated that, “Our national interest will be served only if this pipeline does not significantly exacerbate the climate problem.” And yet, in the State Department’s environmental impact assessment draft, it indicated that even if the president denies a permit to TransCanada to build the project, the oil in Alberta may be shipped to the U.S. by rail, leading to comparable emissions.

Tube getting small

So like Tubularsock has said before The KeystoneXL pipeline will be approved by Obummer! THIS IS A GIVEN!

Somehow the Progressives and liberals who still back Obummer don’t seem to get it.

Yes, Obummer is our historic first Black President but being Black and being a step-and-fetch-it-boy to the White power structure doesn’t bode well for real transformation and true progress for any of us.

In America today there are many strong Black leaders with integrity that warrant our respect and support. Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, Jeremiah Wright to name my favorites but when it comes to integrity, strength, and leadership Obummer is a shameful example of Black America! Or any American for that matter!

Tube on moon heading 2013

There was a protest yesterday, Thursday the 20th, in San Francisco and Tubularsock knew it was coming but still got up late and had to double time to get to the appointed staging area which was just east of the Golden Gate Bridge. And of course it was up hill!

So Tubularsock hopped upon his old heavy two-wheeler and started to pedal in the direction of San Francisco. The rally was to start around 11:30-ish so leaving Oakland at 10:15 should pretty much work if I pedaled rapidly. But this was my old heavy two-wheeler and the gear cable is broken so my range of gear choices ………. forget it!

So rather than zip to BART (our rapid transit system) I clanked along and caught the train at the Lake Merritt Station and was whisked under the Bay to the SF Embarcadero Station right at the foot of the Ferry Building.

Bounding out of the BART elevator which has a speed very close to my old heavy two-wheeler grinding up hill I jumped on my trusty steed and rode up Market Street made a left at Embarcadero and headed for the Golden Gate Bridge.

Well now, this was a Thursday around 10:40 am and the Embarcadero is a rather popular place and the fossil fuel driven vehicles were moving as crazy as usual in order to move a 150 lb person in a 2200 lb steel/plastic box. But Tubularsock rides the City a lot so I’m used to it. Cabs think they own the road, buses think they own the road, commercial trucks think they own the road, cars think they own the road and some cyclists think they own the road. When Tubularsock pedals his two wheeler he KNOWS he doesn’t own the road and so far he is living proof!

Zipping (in my mind only) past Pier 39 a mall-type-tourist-trap selling authentic San Francisco keepsakes made in China and passing Fisherman’s Wharf where they haven’t seen a fishing fleet in thirty years (if you’re into mercury-laden fish of all kinds, well be my guest) I pedaled toward the Marina Green.

Moving along the beach front trail dodging rent-a-bike tourists Tubularsock finally dismounts the old heavy two-wheeler and double locks it so it might be there on my return just short of Fort Point. From there it’s a steep climb up to the Golden Gate Bridge. It was 11:25.

The climb up from the waters edge to the staging area is a bitch but after a rapid bike ride it adds to the endurance challenge.

Arriving at the staging area fully exercised at 11:37 ….. the first announcement ……. there is a delay in the protest. The NATIONAL NURSES UNITED protest against the  Keystone XL pipeline was delayed because the bus loads of nurses were tied up in traffic! I love irony like that!

And then the first photo I took was that of an oil tanker passing by in the Bay right behind the banners-of-protest against the Keystone XL pipeline. Irony abound, Tubularsock knew that this was going to be a great day.

Tanker oil protest

After the nurses arrived in buses they joined the rally at the staging area for the protest and after speeches and music proceed to march across the Golden Gate Bridge. About 1500 protester took part in the march and they were very dedicated in their convictions of the health hazards created by the Keystone XL.

Nurse protest XL pipeline

Now Tubularsock has been to a multitude of protest in his time but this particular one was focused upon the HEALTH HAZARDS of the XL pipeline and oil refining in general.

And that perspective always seems to get lost in the dialog when discussing BIG OIL.

A fun side note: In the recent Mayflower oil pipeline spill an independent air sampling conducted in the weeks following the spill identified some 30 toxic chemicals. And remember inhaling contaminated air is just one way to be exposed to chemicals from oil. Hundreds of families’ health were affected in Mayflower and the surrounding area.

And compensations doesn’t bring back your health!

Now you know that Tubularsock knows that the XL pipeline will be approved by our step-and-fetch Obummer but my hat goes off to the NATIONAL NURSES UNITED and all others who stand up and say NO to the madness of BIG OIL.

To the property owners that had their land taken from them through eminent domain by a foreign corporation so as to run a private pipeline through that land is shocking to say the least. But PROFIT BEFORE PEOPLE is the capitalist creed.

And even though Tubularsock has predicted the outcome he never is going to stand by and not at least stand up and say NO.

And I urge everyone to do the same.

tar sands copy

On my return trip back to Oakland Tubularsock had to weave his old heavy two-wheeler through a group of homeless veterans with their cardboard signs asking for help at the entrance to BART.

You know, I just couldn’t help but wonder just how many people have been fucked up because of this incessant lust for oil.

Tubekickheading2013

You have herd of the XLPipeline and how bad it is for living things at all levels.

And you know that Step-And-Fetch-It-Obummer postponed his decision on the Ol’ XL until after he could be sure that all the facts could be studied and all the reports were collected. Oh yeah, and that would come after the election ……..

And those people who know Step-And-Fetch-It because they have counted the number of direct lies the guy throws like litter from a car window are still trying to awaken people and put pressure on him to stop this pipeline extension.

Tubularsock is still reeling from stacking all my extra dollars after Obummer saved the economy to pay too much attention to the XL. But here’s some stuff for the fun of it.

I do commend these protestors for the correct view but none of you really believe that Obummer is not going to pass this deal.

It was signed sealed and delivered a very long time ago and you guys are just wasting your time. You can rest assured that you are correct and time will prove you correct but jobs and diversifying our energy dependence —– between wind, solar, and guinea pig circular runs and OIL, NUCLEAR, and BOMB-BLAST COLLECTION — will “force” him to approve the XL. Really, “It’s good for the ….”

And Tubularsock will tell you right now that the fact that the Alberta Clipper [Enbridge] pipeline is already moving Alberta Tar Sand oil into the U.S. and has had 804 pipeline spills totaling 6.8 million gallons of oil since 1999. This is according to the Polaris Institute.

But that doesn’t matter.

The Alberta Clipper [Enbridge] pipeline was responsible for the spill (July, 2010) that happened in Marshall, a community of 7,400 in southwestern Michigan. At least 1 million gallons of oil blackened more than two miles of Talmadge Creek and almost 36 miles of the Kalamazoo River.

About 150 families have been permanently relocated and most of the tainted stretch of river between Marshall and Kalamazoo remained closed to the public but was reopened 23 months later (June 21,2012). It is still not cleaned up but the EPA says that people can once again swim and boat on the Kalamazoo, but that doesn’t mean the river is oil-free.

Fun side note: County health departments and the Michigan Department of Community Health have said that touching oil in the river might cause temporary skin irritation, but they don’t expect any long-term health effects. Stations with cleaning wipes are set up near kiosks at boat launches so people can remove oil from their skin and boating equipment.(June, 2012) SO BRING YOUR KIDS RIGHT ON DOWN TO THE SHORE LINE AND THEY CAN BE AS BLACK AS THE DEAD WATER FOWL. YA’ HEAR?

Hey, but that doesn’t matter.

The other Alberta Tar Sand oil is pumped through the Pegasus pipeline. That pipeline ruptured in Mayflower, Arkansas dumping 300,000 barrels all over the town.

And that doesn’t matter.

Fun side note: Tar sands oil is 15 to 20 times more acidic than conventional oil and up to seven times thicker. Tar sands oil is 16 times more likely to breach a pipeline than regular crude oil. Feel better now? Why not put a pipeline full of this shit crossing the entire United States?

But that doesn’t matter.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration has given the Keystone pipeline structural exemptions which allows TransCanada to operate at 80 percent of the minimum yield strength of the pipe rather than the maximum of 72 percent required by federal regulations….

You guessed it…. that doesn’t matter.

The State Department inspector general launched an investigation into improper conflicts of interest between TransCanada and the contractor the State Department hired to write the environmental impact statement.(May, 2013)

But that won’t matter either!

The House approved legislation to green-light the Keystone XL oil pipeline (the fourth optional segment). The legislation, which was authored by Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.), was approved on a 241-175 vote. Despite the numerous pro-Keystone votes, it is unlikely that the legislation will gain traction in the Senate.

And the White House threatened to veto the bill. (May, 2013)

But how many times have we heard that!

So that doesn’t matter.

You see, TransCanada, it is believed, is already storing tar sand oil in Cushing, Oklahoma, the Keystone Pipeline hub, pending the opening of the southern leg.

That matters!

So …….. the deal is going to go down ……… it is just how the flowing words will mask the flow of oil to make us all feel better.

And why, you ask?

Fun side note: The US Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest oil consuming government body in the US and in the world! The DoD uses 360,000 barrels of oil each day. (2009)

In fact ………. our military exploits are conducted to control and acquire secure oil supplies. But it is the military that is using that oil which requires the military to control and secure oil supplies.

Could there be a self-propelling activity here?

Yes, of course Tubularsock has a solution to this entire mess.

BRING THE BOYS HOME!

Over 50% of DOD’s oil consumption is used in overseas exploits. End the exploits save the oil and apply it to domestic use and gas prices go down.

Don’t thank me now!
